Carrington, ND

Carrington is Foster County's city and county seat, with 2,080 people at the 2020 census. Before homesteaders arrived, the area was open prairie with Native American history tied to Hawk's Nest Ridge southwest of town. The Northern Pacific Railroad reached the settlement in 1882, and Carrington took shape around the line, then became Foster County's seat when the county was organized in 1883. The railroad brought lumber, stores, churches, and the first real town skyline to a place built on a very wide horizon.

Agriculture still supplies the city's main conversation. Dakota Growers Pasta began as a 1990 cooperative of 1,100 farm families growing durum wheat, with milling and pasta production starting in 1993. The Foster County Museum and Chieftain Conference Center hold local history, while the Hawk's Nest site is now a 100-acre nature park with a prairie view. Carrington Public Schools, county offices, grain businesses, and the pasta plant make it a regional service point. It is a North Dakota county seat where the rail line, the wheat fields, and value-added food production all meet.
