Carrizo Springs, TX

Carrizo Springs is Dimmit County's seat and largest city, with 4,892 residents in the 2020 census. U.S. 83 and U.S. 277 meet here about 82 miles northwest of Laredo and 45 miles north of the Mexican border, making the town the county's main civic and service center. The name comes from the Spanish word for the cane grass that grew around the local springs. Water shaped the early economy too: by 1904, thirty artesian wells irrigated more than 1,000 acres. Carrizo Springs is the oldest town in Dimmit County, and its courthouse, ranching history, and school district all belong to the same South Texas story.

Carrizo Springs CISD serves the county, with the Wildcats and Lady Cats giving the town a visible school identity. The city also maintains parks and recreation facilities alongside its municipal work. The local scoop is a highway town whose identity comes from county government, artesian water, ranch country, and a school system that reaches well beyond the city limits.
