Carrsville, VA

Carrsville is an Isle of Wight County census-designated place in Hampton Roads, six miles west of Franklin and 15 miles east of Suffolk. The 2020 census counted 346 people. U.S. 58 Business runs through the center, so the community is organized along a highway corridor instead of a dense municipal grid. The road also carries the older name Carrsville Highway, crossing CSX tracks on the Carrsville Community Memorial Bridge. Jesse Carr, whose family had deep roots in Isle of Wight County, gave the place its name.

Rail is part of the local story. The Portsmouth and Roanoke Railroad reached the area in the 1830s, linking trade moving from the Roanoke River toward Norfolk and Portsmouth; the line remains part of the CSX system. The Blackwater River lies about five miles west, and the surrounding land shifts between sandhill and marsh ecosystems. That transition is why Carrsville is associated with birding and spring and summer wildflowers. The community has long been shaped by volunteer groups, civic organizations, church activities, and families with roots there, all gathered along the Route 58 and rail corridor.
