Cartwright, OK

Cartwright is a Bryan County CDP that grew out of the Denison Dam project. When the dam was being built, a community of shelters for workmen formed here, giving the place an unusually clear beginning: a construction camp that became a named community. The post office opened in 1940, and the name honors Congressman Wilburn Cartwright, whose work with Sam Rayburn helped secure the dam across the Red River.

That origin still sets Cartwright apart from older Oklahoma towns. Its first map was drawn by the needs of a major public-works project, while the post office gave the settlement a lasting address after the work crews moved on. The dam made the town, and the post office gave it continuity. The town began with the project. The community’s story is tied to the Red River, Denison Dam, and the people who arrived to build it. Cartwright is a small rural place, but its name carries a piece of the region’s water-and-infrastructure history.
