Cashiers, NC

Cashiers is a Jackson County census-designated place in the southern Blue Ridge, where U.S. 64 and NC 107 cross the Cashiers Valley. The valley's three river systems - the Chattooga, Whitewater, and Horsepasture - give the place a surprisingly watery map, while the Chattooga rises nearby and the Tuckasegee feeds Lake Glenville. The High Hampton Inn opened in 1924, and the Zachary-Tolbert House, built around 1850, now houses the Cashiers Historical Society's local story. Cashiers is pronounced KASH-erz, a useful local detail for a mountain place whose roads, rivers, and old summer houses meet at one crossroads.
