Cashtown, PA

Cashtown is an Adams County census-designated place in Franklin Township, with 453 residents in the 2020 census. It lies west of Gettysburg, where Old U.S. 30 follows the original Lincoln Highway through the settlement and the modern U.S. 30 bypass forms the northern edge. A post office has served Cashtown since 1833. Local tradition ties the name to a tavern keeper who required payment in cash, a story that has stuck to the crossroads.

Franklin Township Elementary is physically in Cashtown despite its Orrtanna mailing address, and the place belongs to Gettysburg Area School District. Gettysburg Area Middle and High School handle older students. Cashtown Inn and the volunteer fire company still mark the crossroads. Cashtown's location also keeps it close to the Civil War landscape: Confederate forces reached the crossroads in late June 1863 before the armies moved east toward Gettysburg. Today the old highway, post office, school, and farm roads give Cashtown a separate identity from the battlefield town nearby.
