About Cassopolis

Cassopolis is the village seat of Cass County, mostly in LaGrange Township with a small piece in Penn Township. It was platted in 1831 and has been tied to Diamond Lake ever since; the lake sits just southeast of the village and is the largest lake in southwestern Michigan. The historic courthouse on North Broadway, built in 1899, is the other fixed point. After county offices moved to the newer M-62 building in 2003, the old courthouse sat vacant for years before the county began working to bring it back into use. Cassopolis Public Schools serve the village and surrounding area, while Main Street and the courthouse keep the county-seat story visible. Cassopolis is a courthouse village with a lake just beyond the grid.
