Castaic's defining landscape doubles as regional infrastructure. Castaic Lake is the terminal reservoir of the State Water Project's West Branch, holding emergency and regulatory water storage while supporting public recreation. The dam and lake were built from 1965 to 1974 about two miles north of the community. Below them, the unincorporated CDP follows Interstate 5 north of Santa Clarita; the 2020 census counted 18,937 residents. The state recreation area includes an upper lake and lagoon, 29 miles of accessible shoreline, more than 11,200 acres of parkland and open space, and over seven miles of trails. Boating, sailing, and water skiing use the upper lake, while the lagoon is reserved for non-gasoline-powered craft and a guarded summer swim beach.

Los Angeles County scheduled introductory kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding there on Saturdays in summer 2026. As of July 2026, day use continued Wednesday through Sunday, but the campground remained closed for repairs after the Hughes Fire. Away from the water, the Ryan M. Clinkunbroomer Castaic Sports Complex combines ball fields, a gymnasium, community rooms, a walking track, courts, playgrounds, a skatepark, and batting cages. Castaic Library grew from a 2008 storefront to an expanded 2015 building with a community room, two group-study rooms, and dedicated children's and teen areas.
