Castanea, PA

Castanea is a census-designated place in Clinton County, just across Bald Eagle Creek from Lock Haven, with Bald Eagle Mountain rising along its southern side. The surrounding township was formed in 1877 from Dunnstable Township, and the small settlement grew in the valley between the West Branch of the Susquehanna and the mountain roads. Lock Haven is the nearby service center, but Castanea has its own township offices, fire company, homes, and local routines.

The old Castanea Railroad Station, built in 1883, now sits beside the trailhead for the Bald Eagle Valley Trail. The first 3.4-mile section follows a former railroad bed toward Youngdale Road, giving the community a direct walking and biking route into the valley. River crossings, the trail, and the station keep the railroad landscape visible, while township meetings, leaf collection, recreation work, and the fire company handle the ordinary calendar. Castanea feels like a small place with a big neighbor next door and a trail running through its history.
