Castle Hayne, NC

Castle Hayne is a New Hanover County census-designated place north of Wilmington, part of the Wilmington metropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 1,234 residents, up slightly from 2010. It sits in Cape Fear Township, and the CDP was first listed in the 1980 census. The name carries a forest history: longleaf pine, naval stores, and lumber drove the regional economy through the eighteenth and much of the nineteenth century. Castle Hayne Road still gives the community its main connection to Wilmington and the rest of New Hanover County.

The surrounding forest once supplied tar, pitch, rosin, and ship timber, tying this inland-looking place to North Carolina's coastal trade. During the Revolutionary War, the British maintained a garrison at nearby Fort Johnson, another reminder that the roads north of Wilmington were part of larger military and commercial routes. Today, Castle Hayne is a county-served community without an incorporated town government, with homes, roads, schools, and nearby agricultural and industrial land doing the everyday work. Wilmington provides the larger employment and shopping map, while Castle Hayne keeps its own name and northern New Hanover setting. Its local shorthand is pine country turned metropolitan edge.
