About Catawissa

Catawissa is a Columbia County borough on the southeast bank of the Susquehanna, near the mouth of Catawissa Creek. William Hughes laid out the town in 1787 as Hughesburg, and river traffic soon gave the place a reason to grow; the old ferry, stores, and later fire company all followed that river-town logic. The Catawissa Friends Meetinghouse, listed on the National Register, is one of the older landmarks still on the map. Catawissa is central Pennsylvania in a river-and-creek shape, with Routes 42 and 487 crossing through town.
