Catlettsburg, KY

Catlettsburg grew at the meeting of the Ohio and Big Sandy rivers, where river traffic, frontier travel, and later railroads made a natural town site. Alexander Catlett arrived in 1798, and the town grew around the Catlett family’s store and the traffic moving along the Ohio. By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the city was a major hardwood timber market, with logs and goods moving through the river port. The railroad bridge across the Big Sandy added another piece to the transportation map.

Catlettsburg is Boyd County’s seat and part of the Huntington–Ashland metropolitan area, so county offices and nearby Ashland supply services beyond the city’s own streets. Local life still follows the rivers through flood planning, roads, parks, businesses, and views toward West Virginia, while schools are part of the Boyd County system after the former independent district merged in 1974. Catlettsburg’s present is smaller than its timber-market heyday, but the river junction remains the reason the city is here. It is a county-seat town with a working waterfront history and an Appalachian crossroads feel.
