Cave City, KY

Cave City is a Barren County home-rule city whose reason for being is visible in the name. The 2020 census counted 2,356 residents. The Knob City Land Company bought the site in October 1853 and laid out a resort town near Mammoth Cave; the first train arrived in 1859, and the town incorporated in 1866. A cave within the city limits and Sink Hole Spring supplied the early place-name logic. That combination of rail access and a nationally known cave set Cave City on a tourism track long before interstate travel.

Today, the town's visitor-facing strip gathers around Interstate 65's Exit 53 and Kentucky Routes 70 and 90, with motels, restaurants, and visitor stops serving people headed to Mammoth Cave National Park about ten miles west. US 31W runs through the center, so Cave City has a clear split between its older town street and the highway interchange that handles regional traffic. Caverna Independent School District keeps schools tied to the town itself. Cave City works because the cave, the road, and the train-era center remain close enough to shape one another.
