Cayuga, IN

Cayuga is a Vermillion County town in Eugene Township, near the confluence of the Vermillion and Wabash rivers. State Roads 63 and 234 meet here, making the town a road junction as much as a river community. The present name came after the place began as Eugene Station in 1827; it was also called Osonimon, after an Indigenous leader, before the Cayuga name took hold. John Groenendyke, an early settler from Cayuga County, New York, is part of that naming story.

North Vermillion Community School Corporation operates North Vermillion High School, tying Cayuga to the rural school network. The nearby Cayuga Generating Station and Colonial Brick Corporation point to the industrial side of the town’s river setting, while farm roads lead toward Newport, Clinton, and the Wabash valley. The two state routes carry daily traffic through a landscape of river bottoms, farm fields, and utility lines. Cayuga is a small place with a layered name, a pair of state roads, and a landscape where water, power, brick, and agriculture meet.
