About Central Bridge

Central Bridge is a hamlet and census-designated place shared by the towns of Schoharie and Esperance in Schoharie County. The 2020 census counted 740 residents. It sits where Cobleskill Creek meets Schoharie Creek, with Interstate 88 along the southern edge and the Schoharie flowing to the east. The valley gathers several scales of travel in one view: local roads, the interstate, and the northward-running waterway that eventually reaches the Mohawk River.

The place grew around a bridge across Schoharie Creek, which gave Central Bridge its name and its first practical purpose. The hamlet occupies the northwestern part of Esperance and the southwestern section of Schoharie, so the census boundary crosses a landscape that residents experience as one valley. Farms, wooded slopes, and farm lanes fill the gaps between roads and water, while the creek junction keeps the community tied to the larger river system. Central Bridge is a small place with a split municipal address and a single geographic center.
