Central High, OK

Central High is a Stephens County town whose name began as a school map before it became a municipal name. The 2020 census counted 1,181 residents. In 1921, four smaller school districts - Wolf Creek, Nellie, Prairie Center, and Pleasant Hill - consolidated around a high school near the center of the new district. The town later incorporated in 1995, keeping the school-era name on the road signs. The school name remains the town's clearest signpost for anyone driving through today.

The old school story still gives the surrounding pattern its shape. Central High sits west of Marlow in a broad ranching and farming area, with county roads doing most of the connecting. Students once traveled from districts that offered only eighth grade; the consolidated high school expanded what the area could offer. Central High is a place where education came first, incorporation came later, and the town's name preserves the reason the community gathered there in the first place.
