Ceredo, WV

Ceredo is a Wayne County town on the Ohio River, tucked between Twelvepole Creek and the Big Sandy River near the West Virginia–Kentucky–Ohio meeting area. Eli Thayer founded it in 1857 as a free-labor community, naming the settlement for Ceres, the goddess of agriculture. Early Ceredo had a shoe factory, match plant, iron foundry, gristmill, and woolen mill, but the Civil War and the collapse of several industries changed the town’s course. The railroad later pulled the valley toward neighboring Kenova and Huntington.

Ceredo’s past is still unusually easy to find. The Ceredo Town Museum holds Civil War material, local newspapers, school yearbooks, railroad artifacts, and the Ceredo Petroglyph. Austin’s Homemade Ice Cream has served from town since 1947, giving the river town a present-day ritual alongside its older industries. U.S. 60, the Ohio River, and the Huntington-area metro keep Ceredo connected, but the town’s story is still about the experiment that started it and the working river corridor that carried it forward.
