Chadbourn, NC

Chadbourn sits in Columbus County inside the Carolina Border Belt, the tobacco-market region that follows both sides of the North Carolina–South Carolina line. A post office opened here in 1882, incorporation followed in 1883, and the town took its name from a local lumber family. Tobacco warehouses and rail connections gave Chadbourn a regional role larger than its town limits: the old passenger depot connected trains toward South Carolina, Columbia, Augusta, and Wilmington. Timber and tobacco therefore sit side by side in the town’s history, with the depot and warehouse district showing how Chadbourn grew.

Crop work still has a nearby institutional presence. The Border Belt Tobacco Research Station hosts an annual North Carolina–South Carolina tobacco tour and Southeastern North Carolina Peanut Field Day, linking the old market-town geography to current field research and farm demonstrations. The practical local map still points toward fields and farm roads, with Chadbourn’s downtown and old depot carrying the memory of the market belt. It is a small Columbus County town facing the state line, with lumber, tobacco, rail travel, and agricultural research all part of the same local story.
