Chapin, SC

Chapin is a Lexington County town about 24 miles northwest of Columbia, with 1,809 residents at the 2020 census. Its early story is tied to the railroad and to farms along the Saluda River, but Lake Murray changed the map in a way people could not ignore. The Dreher Shoals Dam, completed in 1927, flooded farms and homesteads and left Chapin connected to the rest of the county by a narrower road route. The lake first looked like a loss of land; over time it became the water around which the town organized its newer identity.

That split between old town and big reservoir is still easy to see. Chapin's historic core includes the Commercial Historic District, while Lake Murray brings fishing tournaments and wildlife to the edge of town. The Labor Day Festival keeps an annual town tradition in the streets, and Our Lady of the Lake adds another recognizable landmark. Chapin works because both maps remain in play: the railroad-era community on one side, and the broad lake and Columbia connection on the other.
