About Irmo

Irmo is a town in Lexington and Richland counties, South Carolina, situated twelve miles northwest of Columbia as a suburb within the Columbia metropolitan area. Chartered on Christmas Eve 1890 in response to the opening of the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Railroad, the community of approximately 11,800 is known for the annual Okra Strut festival, begun in 1973 as a fundraiser for a new library. Public education is administered by Lexington School District 5.
