Chariton, IA

Chariton was laid out in 1849 as the seat of Lucas County, and the courthouse square still organizes the city. The earliest county-seat commissioners met on the ground that became the southwest corner of the square; the town was platted in 1850. That civic center remains paired with the Lucas County Courthouse Square Historic District, whose contributing properties include several individually listed buildings. The square remains the place where government, commerce, and historic buildings meet.

Chariton's working life reaches beyond county government. Hy-Vee moved its headquarters to Chariton in 1945 and remains a major presence through the company's distribution and grocery operations; Johnson Machine Works is another large private employer. Lucas County Health Center provides regional medical care, and Chariton Public Schools now serve the whole county after school-district consolidations. Its schools include Columbus and Van Allen elementary schools, Chariton Middle School, and Chariton High School. The city has the familiar four-corner arrangement of a county seat—courthouse, schools, health care, and commerce—with the square still tying those roles together.
