Charleston, UT

Charleston is a small Wasatch County town founded in 1859 by Mormon pioneers near Noakes Springs. George Noakes and William Manning built the first houses, while the earlier trapper Aaron Daniels had moved to the Provo River nearby in 1858. The town began as a ranching and farming settlement in the Provo Valley and incorporated in 1899. Even the name has two local versions: one credits surveyor Charles Shelton, and another credits early resident William Winterton. Charleston sits in the valley west of the Wasatch Mountains, with the Provo River and nearby farms shaping the local map. The town is small enough that its first houses, springs, and disputed names still tell most of the story. Charleston is a Utah foothill community with a pioneer beginning and a very particular sense of place.
