Charlestown, NH

Charlestown stretches along the Connecticut River in Sullivan County, with the river forming its western edge and Route 12 running through the main village. The town includes North Charlestown, South Charlestown, and Hemlock Center, so its daily map is a string of settlements with the main village at the center. The 2020 census counted 4,806 residents across the town, including 1,078 in the main village. Great Meadow sits within the Connecticut River Valley Important Bird Area, and a local survey has documented more than 180 bird species there. Charlestown’s name came later than its strategic role. The settlement was granted as Plantation No. 4 on December 31, 1735, and settled in 1740. A stockade built in 1744 became Fort at Number 4, the northernmost British outpost on the Connecticut River and an important waypoint between Boston and Fort Crown Point during the French and Indian Wars. The modern Fort at No. 4 open-air museum at 267 Springfield Road recreates that frontier setting with reenactments, workshops, lectures, and seasonal events. It gives the town’s early military history a physical address residents and visitors can still use.

Charlestown’s local-life map extends from the main village to the river and hills. Patch Park is identified as a place for public Connecticut River access, while Morningside Flight Park uses the valley’s slopes for hang gliding and paragliding. The same plan lists trail work, a town pool, and the Fort at No. 4 among its recreation resources. The valley’s broad floor and wooded slopes leave room for conservation work and recreation alongside established neighborhoods. That mix gives Charlestown a clear shape: a Route 12 village backed by wooded uplands, with a major river and a reconstructed frontier fort at the center of the story.
