Chassell, MI

Chassell sits on Pike Bay of Portage Lake in Houghton County's Upper Peninsula, near the mouth of the Sturgeon River. The land that became the community passed to the St. Mary's Canal and Land Company in 1855; Francis Jacker built an early log cabin near the river mouth in 1863. That water geography still does most of the work: Portage Lake and the Keweenaw Waterway set the shoreline, while the Sturgeon River points inland toward the forest and old copper-country routes. Chassell is part of Chassell Township, with a post office and township school serving a wider rural area.

Summer puts a very specific date on the local calendar. The Copper Country Strawberry Festival takes over Chassell Township Park on the Friday and Saturday after July 4, with parades, live music, vendors, children's activities, a strawberry auction, and the famous shortcake. The current K-12 school stands near a nine-hole disc golf course, while the historic 1912 high school and 1917 elementary buildings remain part of the area's preservation story.
