Chatom, AL

Chatom sits at the center of Washington County, where Highways 56 and 17 meet and county business has gathered since the town became the county seat in 1907. The town was founded in 1904 and incorporated in 1949, giving its civic map a fairly recent frame even though the surrounding pine country reaches much further back. The courthouse on Court Street handles county business, while Front Street, local shops, and highway traffic keep the town connected to the communities spread through southwest Alabama.

Chatom's list of everyday gathering spots is bigger than its size might suggest. The town has a library, hospital and nursing home, community center, Lake Ellis, an 18-hole golf course, and an airport. Those places divide the week between errands, health care, recreation, and county-seat work. The town's current wastewater and wetland work also shows the less glamorous side of keeping a small county seat running. Chatom feels like the service town of Washington County: highways bring people in, county offices give them a reason to stop, and the library, lake, course, and hospital keep daily life from collapsing into a single trip.
