Chattahoochee, FL

Chattahoochee is the Gadsden County seat on high ground above the east bank of the Apalachicola River, near the Florida-Georgia line. The 2020 census counted 2,955 residents. The river is formed by the Chattahoochee and Flint rivers just north of town, then runs south toward Apalachicola Bay. Long before modern county lines, the area was a Native trade center and a crossing on the Old Spanish Trail. Steamboats later carried cotton downriver, and lumber became the main cargo after the Civil War.

The city's built history is unusually concentrated. The Apalachicola Arsenal was constructed on the bluffs between 1834 and 1839, served several military and institutional uses, and became part of Florida State Hospital after the hospital opened in 1876. The hospital grounds and surviving arsenal buildings still give Chattahoochee a distinct landmark story. Gadsden County schools, including Chattahoochee Elementary, tie the city to the county seat routine, while Tallahassee supplies the larger regional orbit. Here, the river, the old arsenal, and county government all occupy the same local conversation.
