Chaumont, NY

Chaumont sits at the mouth of the Chaumont River on Chaumont Bay, an arm of Lake Ontario, in Jefferson County's Town of Lyme. The first European-American settlement moved to the present site in 1802 after an earlier location proved unhealthy. Fishing and shipbuilding shaped the early waterfront, and the village took its name from Jacques-Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont, a French landowner linked to Benjamin Franklin. Chaumont incorporated in 1874; its historic core was listed as the Chaumont Historic District in 1990. Route 12 follows the village's inland edge toward Watertown and Cape Vincent.

Water still does most of the local organizing. The village's public beach, marinas, fishing spots, and boat traffic face the bay, while the Chaumont River marks the northern side of the built-up center. The Lyme Central School District serves Chaumont and Three Mile Bay from its campus in the village, and nearby Long Point State Park extends into the bay on Point Peninsula. Historic houses, the old railroad station, the Grange Hall, and small businesses fill in the inland streets. Chaumont is a Lake Ontario village where a working school, a preserved nineteenth-century core, and a boating shoreline share one compact map.
