Checotah, OK

Checotah is a McIntosh County city at the meeting of Interstate 40 and U.S. 69, with Lake Eufaula a few miles west. The 2020 census counted 3,018 residents. The place began as a Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad railhead on the old Texas Road in 1872 and was named for Samuel Checote, the first Creek Nation chief elected after the Civil War. That mix of rail, Creek history, and cattle-country travel still sets the tone. The city's location makes it a natural stop between eastern Oklahoma and the lake country.

Checotah's downtown historic district, Katy Depot, Heartland Heritage Museum, and antique malls give the center plenty to browse, while the Honey Springs battlefield lies a few miles northeast. Bessie Tabor Park, Tracy Scoggins Park, and the Checotah Sports Complex handle ballfields, walking, splash-pad, and disc-golf routines. The city also claims the steer-wrestling capital title.
