Chesapeake, WV

Chesapeake is a Kanawha County town on the south bank of the Kanawha River, where MacCorkle Avenue, river traffic, and the old C&O rail corridor meet east of Charleston. The community was incorporated in 1948 and took its name from the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, which had served the valley since 1873. That origin gives the town a distinctly transportation-shaped map: homes and businesses in the narrow river valley, with the railroad and road carrying the wider Kanawha story through town.

The present-day municipal rhythm is hands-on. Town offices handle bills, forms, permits, council meetings, emergency coordination, and special projects, while the river and highway keep Chesapeake connected to the communities along the valley. The C&O name remains part of the local memory even as the week turns on utility questions, public notices, and town events. Chesapeake is a small river town whose history arrived on rails and whose current life is managed from a few blocks of MacCorkle Avenue.
