Chesterfield, SC

Chesterfield is the seat of Chesterfield County, a town established when the county was formed in 1785. Its historic core carries three National Register districts—the East Main Street Historic District, the West Main Street Historic District, and the Dr. Lucas House—and the original courthouse now serves as a visitor center with a museum, art gallery, genealogical society, and Chamber of Commerce. General Sherman’s troops occupied the town in 1865, leaving another layer in the local record. South Carolina Highway 9 passes through town, leading east to Cheraw and west to Pageland.
