Monroe, NC

Monroe was laid out for government before it grew into a city. After North Carolina created Union County from parts of Mecklenburg and Anson counties in 1842, commissioners surveyed a central site, drew a courthouse square, and incorporated the new county seat in 1843 under President James Monroe's name. Cotton trade and the railroad's arrival in the 1870s made the square a regional commercial center, followed by textile mills. Monroe's civil-rights era was also nationally visible: Robert F. Williams led the local NAACP branch and argued for armed self-defense, while Freedom Riders joined a 1961 campaign against the segregated swimming pool. The 2020 census recorded 34,562 residents, and the July 2025 estimate was 42,644.

Downtown remains the place where that courthouse plan meets current public institutions. A marked 1.5-mile greenway loops through the historic business district; joined to the 1.1-mile Bearskin Creek Greenway, it links the Union County Farmers Market, Belk-Tonawanda Park, and nearby recreation sites. Belk-Tonawanda adds a playground, seasonal splash pad, amphitheater, bocce courts, and outdoor fitness stations. Two city-operated cultural spaces sit a few blocks apart: the restored 1940 Art Moderne Dowd Center Theatre reopened after renovation as a 560-seat performance, film, and meeting venue, while the Monroe Science Center has more than 30 hands-on exhibits and a sensory room.

The science center honors Monroe native and NASA engineer Christine Mann Darden, and its 2026 calendar includes story times and STEAM activities. Music on Main concerts, splash-pad hours, and theater programs give the district a recurring public schedule. Outside downtown, the municipal aquatics and fitness center provides pools, a water park, indoor track, double gym, childcare, and group classes. US 74 and the 18-mile Monroe Expressway carry regional traffic past the city; the toll road opened in 2018 and bypasses the older commercial corridor rather than placing Interstate 485 inside Monroe.
