Chestertown, NY

Chestertown is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Chester, Warren County, at the junction of New York 8 and U.S. 9 in the Adirondacks. The 2020 census counted 586 residents. Brant Lake lies nearby, and the community sits at about 896 feet above sea level, so water, elevation, and the two highways all figure in the local map. Route 8 and U.S. 9 bring through traffic into a settlement whose center remains associated with Main Street, older buildings, and the North Warren area.

New England settlers founded the community in 1799 after an earlier settlement called Chester Four Corners had taken shape. Mills along the creeks supported early work in farming, lumbering, and tanning; tourism later joined that economy as the Adirondacks drew visitors. Chestertown’s Historic District preserves the older commercial and residential center, and the North Warren Central School District links students from Chestertown, Brant Lake, Adirondack, and Pottersville to one school system. The North Warren Historical Society also traces the area’s shared institutions, including the 1973 school consolidation and the 1994 library opening. Chestertown operates as both a crossroads and a local center for the lake-and-mountain communities around it.
