About Chetek

Chetek is a Barron County city built around a six-lake chain, with U.S. 53 bringing traffic through a place that has long mixed working town and cabin-country identities. The 2020 census counted 2,172 residents. The name traces to an Ojibwa word associated with pelicans, and the first post office arrived in 1872. The city occupies part of the larger Town of Chetek, so the lake map naturally spills beyond the municipal line. Chetek's parks make the water practical: public docks, a boat landing, a beach, fishing areas, picnic shelters, a ball field, and several small parks are scattered around the shoreline.

Main Street Park and Chetek Lions Memorial Park keep town life close to the center, while the surrounding chain draws anglers and seasonal visitors. In summer, the shoreline fills fast. Chetek's local scoop is a Wisconsin lake city where the name comes from the water's old inhabitants, the highway handles the through-traffic, and the parks keep residents at the shoreline.
