Cheyenne got its start in 1867 as a booming railroad hub, founded right as Union Pacific pushed the transcontinental tracks west across the high plains. The military quickly established Fort D.A. Russell next door to secure the line, an outpost that eventually grew into F.E. Warren Air Force Base. That dual heritage still shapes the city today. Downtown life revolves around the historic Cheyenne Depot and its open-air plaza. The grand 1880s sandstone station houses a museum and a local brewery, and the surrounding plaza serves as the city's favorite gathering spot throughout the warmer months. You can find community events here almost every weekend, from farmers markets and food truck rallies to the popular Fridays on the Plaza summer concert series. Every summer, the city comes alive for Cheyenne Frontier Days, known worldwide as the "Daddy of 'em All." Held during the last full week of July, the massive festival draws visitors from across the globe for top-tier PRCA rodeo competitions and major evening concerts. The energy spreads across the entire community, featuring grand morning parades, chuckwagon cook-offs, and tradition-rich free pancake breakfasts served right on Depot Plaza. It is a lively celebration of Western heritage that gives newcomers an immediate taste of local pride.
