Chouteau, OK

Chouteau is a Mayes County town at the junction of U.S. 69 and 412, about 35 miles east of Tulsa. The 2020 census counted 2,059 residents. It began as Cody's Creek and became a Katy Railroad stop in 1871, then a cattle town. Today the highway and railroad history meet a newer working landscape: MidAmerica Industrial Park lies about four miles from town and includes more than 80 firms, adding a large industrial neighbor to the rural map. Chouteau also sits beside Oklahoma's largest Amish community.

Amish-owned restaurants, bakeries, furniture stores, and other shops operate in town, and the annual Chouteau Black Buggy Day celebrates that local culture. The town library, fire department, police department, and public-works authority cluster around Main and Lewis streets, while Chouteau Bend on the Grand River and several eastern Oklahoma lakes are only a short drive away. Chouteau is a highway town with a distinctive Amish commercial culture, an industrial park nearby, and water country in every direction.
