Chrisman, IL

Chrisman is an Edgar County city in Ross Township, where the 2020 census counted 1,312 residents. Abraham Smith settled the land in 1840, then sold his farm to John Chrisman in 1851; the city carries the later owner's name. U.S. Route 150 passes through town less than a mile north of U.S. Route 36, making Chrisman a small crossroads in east-central Illinois.

Two CSX railroad lines meet in Chrisman, adding a strong rail feature to the highway map. The city grew around that combination of farm roads, freight routes, and local streets, while nearby Edgar County communities provide the broader service network. A Nazarene church now stands on the site of John Chrisman's home, linking an everyday landmark to the city's early land history. Chrisman is a compact Illinois city with a family name, two rail lines, and a pair of U.S. routes meeting near the center. Those routes still give Chrisman a clear place on the regional map. The rail crossings remain part of the town's shape.
