Christine, ND

Christine is a Richland County city in eastern North Dakota, just off Interstate 29 between the Red and Wild Rice rivers. That position puts it in the Red River Valley, with flat farmland, drainage channels, and long north-south roads shaping the view. The Wahpeton, North Dakota–Minnesota micropolitan area is the nearest regional frame, but Christine remains a small place surrounded by Eagle Township countryside.

Christine began in 1883 as a Scandinavian settlement along the Milwaukee Railroad. The post office followed in 1884 and a railroad depot in 1886. Local accounts most often connect the name to Christina Nilsson, a Swedish opera singer, though another story attributes it to an early settler. The tracks brought the town its first reason to gather; today, I-29, farm roads, postal service, and community institutions carry that role. The city’s roads still run through wheat fields and shelterbelts, with the old railroad history folded into the modern highway landscape. Christine’s story lies in the contrast between a tiny railroad-era town and the wide Red River Valley around it.
