Christopher, IL

Christopher took shape around the railroad in 1879, when residents built a depot and the first train arrived on the new line. The town was named for Christopher Harrison, then grew again after a coal mine opened north of town in 1906. Franklin County's coal history is written across the region: dozens of mines once supplied jobs and local tax money for schools, roads, and other public works. Christopher's older commercial life—its theaters, hotels, stores, and service businesses—grew out of that rail-and-coal era.

Today the city handles the basics of a small municipality, including streets, sewers, parks, police, and fire protection. Rend Lake is close enough to shape the regional outdoor map, while Carbondale and Southern Illinois University sit within the wider education and employment orbit. City hall, local businesses, and community institutions keep daily life centered in Franklin County, even as the old mine economy survives mostly in the landscape, the archives, and the stories families still pass down.
