Church Rock, NM

Church Rock sits just east of Gallup, framed by the towering red sandstone cliffs of western New Mexico. Named after the striking natural formation rising above the desert floor, this small community of around 1,400 residents offers quiet living along historic Route 66 and Interstate 40. As part of the Navajo Nation, local governance and community gatherings center around the Churchrock Chapter House, giving the area deep cultural roots and a close-knit feel.

Outdoor recreation and regional heritage are big draws here, highlighted by neighboring Red Rock Park. The 640-acre park features dramatic canyon backdrops, hiking trails, campgrounds, and a museum showcasing Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni arts and history. Its arena hosts major events throughout the year, including the annual Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial and summer rodeos. Along the highway, Fire Rock Navajo Casino provides dining and entertainment, while the quick seven-mile drive into Gallup gives residents easy access to supermarkets, medical facilities, and the Gallup-McKinley County school system.
