About Churchill

Churchill is a census-designated place in the center of Liberty Township, Trumbull County, carrying the name of the hilltop church that marked the original townsite. The older name, Church Hill, was chosen for the post office in 1833 after Washington officials rejected ‘Liberty’ as too common. By the late nineteenth century, the hill held several churches, a school, stores, trades, and a hotel, so this was a township center before it became a census label. The surrounding township began in the Western Reserve era, and coal mining after 1860 pulled the area into the industrial story of the Mahoning Valley.

Today the place is folded into Liberty Township and the Youngstown–Warren area, so local life spills across the CDP boundary. Belmont Avenue is the township's named business corridor, while Churchill keeps the older hilltop name and the memory of Church Hill. It is a place where the census label is newer than the identity: follow the hill, the church history, and the coal-era township center and you get the shape of Churchill.
