Cimarron, KS

Cimarron is the Gray County seat in southwest Kansas, with 1,981 residents in the 2020 census and U.S. 50 running through town. It was first settled in 1878 and took its name from a fork in the Santa Fe Trail leading toward the Cimarron River. Between 1887 and 1893, the Gray County seat was fought over in a very literal western Kansas political brawl, with Bat Masterson, Bill Tilghman, and Ben Daniels among the figures tied to the dispute. Cimarron kept the seat, and the county courthouse role still gives the town a reason to exist beyond the highway. Today, Cimarron’s local map is a mix of county offices, schools, Main Street businesses, ranch and farm work, and the Santa Fe Trail history that the town keeps bringing forward.

City Hall is on South Main, and current notices cover utilities, meetings, alerts, job openings, and county tornado shelters. The National Park Service places Cimarron on the Mountain Branch of the Santa Fe Trail, putting the town’s name in the middle of a long western travel story. Cimarron is a small county-seat city with a semi-arid landscape, an old trail under its feet, and a civic calendar built around keeping a far-flung community connected.
