Cimarron, NM

Cimarron is a village in Colfax County, New Mexico, on the north bank of the Cimarron River where it comes out of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The 2020 census counted 792 residents. U.S. 64 runs through the village, west toward Eagle Nest and Cimarron Canyon State Park and east toward Raton. Ranches surround the community, including Philmont Scout Ranch just south of town, giving Cimarron a wide mountain-and-river setting. The river runs nearby.

Cimarron began as a stage stop on the Mountain Branch of the Santa Fe Trail and later became part of the Maxwell Land Grant story. The Aztec Mill, built in 1864, now operates as the Old Mill Museum, with local history inside the village’s oldest major building. Cimarron Historic District and Old Town keep the older street pattern visible, while the river and highway carry visitors toward the canyon. Cimarron is a small New Mexico village where ranch country, trail history, scouting, and mountain water all meet.
