City of Creede, CO

Creede is Mineral County’s seat and only incorporated town, set at the headwaters of the Rio Grande beneath the cliffs of the San Juan Mountains. The settlement changed almost overnight after Nicholas C. Creede’s 1890 discovery of a rich silver vein on Willow Creek. Creede Camp spread across several mining settlements and drew thousands of people; the town incorporated in 1892, shortly after a fire destroyed much of the community. The 2020 census counted 257 residents.

Silver mining remained central for nearly a century, with the Homestake mine closing in 1985. Creede’s present-day life carries that history through the Creede Mining Museum, the Creede Museum, the Bachelor Loop, and the Creede Repertory Theatre, founded in 1966 and active in the summer season. Main Street sits at the mouth of Willow Creek Canyon, with the Rio Grande and mountain roads leading outward into the Upper Rio Grande Valley. Creede is a county seat built from a mining rush that still uses its cliffs, river, and old camp sites to organize civic and cultural life.
