The iconic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad still chugs right through town on its way into the San Juan Mountains, filling the valley with the sound of its steam whistle. Housing here varies quite a bit depending on where you look. In town, you will find historic turn-of-the-century homes along tree-lined East Third Avenue, though older neighborhoods often have preservation guidelines to protect their character. Up in the surrounding foothills, hillside properties offer incredible valley views, but building or remodeling on steep terrain comes with extra site planning and wildfire-defensible space requirements.
