Clarkedale, AR

Clarkedale sits in Crittenden County's flat Delta landscape just north of West Memphis, with I-55 providing the quick north–south line. Wapanocca Bayou once ran toward the Mississippi, and the waterway remains part of the area's geographic memory. The community also carries an older county-seat story: Greenock, the county's first seat, stood within today's Clarkedale boundaries. Railroad service arrived in 1883, and merchant and postmaster Cleveland B. Clarke helped give the place its later name. Clarkton became Clarkedale in 1910.

Modern Clarkedale is small, with churches, a post office, agricultural businesses, and roads that connect residents to Marion and the West Memphis area. The city incorporated around 2000 as residents worked to improve roads and water service, a reminder that local government here has always been closely tied to basic infrastructure. Students attend the Marion School District, keeping school life connected to the neighboring city. The result is a Delta town where railroad history, bayou country, agriculture, and interstate access all occupy the same short stretch of map.
