Clarksville, IA

Clarksville is a Butler County city on the Shell Rock River, with 1,264 residents in 2020. The place began with claims and cabins: John Heery filed a claim in 1850, Joseph Hicks built a cabin near what is now Sportsman's Park, and the Clark-Poisal wagon train arrived from Indiana in 1852. Thomas Clark then claimed land along the river, and the new village took his name. A post office opened in 1861, and the town was recorded on the county map in 1854.

The river remains the town's organizing feature, but school and civic buildings give the center its daily rhythm. The Clarksville Community School District serves local students and keeps its campus on North Mather Street. The old county-seat chapter is part of the local texture too: Clarksville briefly held the courthouse before the seat moved to Butler Center, and the former courthouse later became a schoolhouse. Main Street, the river parks, and the school district make Clarksville feel like a place built in layers, with the Shell Rock still running through the middle of the story.
