About Clarysville
Clarysville is an Allegany County census-designated place at the junction of U.S. Route 40 Alternate and Maryland Route 55, where the old National Road, Civil War medicine, and coal engineering meet. The Clarysville Inn, built as a stagecoach stop, became the center of a Union military hospital during the Civil War and later stood as a National Road inn until a 1999 fire destroyed it. Nearby, the Hoffman Drainage Tunnel carried water from the region's coal mines toward Braddock Run. Interstate 68 now runs beside the older road corridor, leaving Clarysville's history legible through transportation, mining, and the inn site.
