Clearfield changed from an agricultural settlement into a defense-linked city within a few years. Construction on Hill Field began along its eastern edge in 1940, and a naval supply depot followed on the southwest side during World War II. When that depot was phased out, its warehouses became the Freeport Center, preserving an industrial and distribution district where military logistics had operated. The city now occupies 7.71 square miles between the Great Salt Lake to the west and the Wasatch Range to the east, though neither landmark lies inside its limits. Clearfield recorded 31,909 residents in the 2020 census, and Hill Air Force Base remains its most consequential neighbor. Steed Park shows how much recreation is concentrated into compact spaces. Its north and south sections each cover 11.5 acres: one includes a pond open for fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, while the other holds 16 lighted pickleball courts, softball diamonds, and a soccer field.

Both connect to the paved Denver and Rio Grande Western Rail Trail, part of the Golden Spoke network extending more than 100 connected miles from Ogden to Provo. Clearfield schedules pickleball leagues throughout the year when weather permits. Clearfield Station provides FrontRunner commuter-train access along the Ogden–Provo corridor, and local routes 626, 627, and 628 connect the station with west Clearfield, Davis Technical College, Layton, and neighboring communities. The Community Arts Center supplies a different recurring routine, presenting several theater productions annually and hosting a community choir and volunteer band; the choir's fall 2026 session begins in September, and the band rehearses on Tuesday evenings. Approved applicants can receive city financial assistance covering up to 75 percent of recreation and arts program registration fees.
