Climax, MI

Climax sits between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, a village whose history is unusually easy to follow through machines, rails, and mail. John Mullett arrived in 1825, Calvin White in 1831, and the Farnsworth brothers in 1832; then Hiram Moore and John Hascall demonstrated a harvester combine here in 1836. The machine was intended to cut and thresh grain in one pass and became an early forerunner of the modern combine. The railroad arrived in 1866, the post office shortened the town's name to Climax in 1877, and the village incorporated in 1899.

Another first still has a marker in town: Michigan's first Rural Free Delivery route began from the Climax post office in December 1896, and a monument stands by Lawrence Memorial District Library. Today the library's History Room, village hall on East Maple, Climax-Scotts Community Schools, and the old farms and homes around the village give those stories a current setting. The railroad line still passes through, even though the depot closed decades ago. Climax's local clue is the overlap: a combine demonstration, a rural-mail experiment, and a school district shared with Scotts all point to a village built around regional connections.
