Cluster Springs, VA

Cluster Springs is an unincorporated census-designated place in southern Halifax County, Virginia, along U.S. Route 501. The 2020 census counted 718 residents. Route 501 runs north about five miles to South Boston and south about 18 miles to Roxboro, North Carolina. Tributaries of the Dan River drain the area, placing the community in the Roanoke River watershed and the rolling farm country of Southside Virginia.

The name carries an older resort history. Before the Civil War, the property at Cluster Spring operated as a hotel and summer resort, while the Richmond–Danville Railroad’s arrival in the 1850s changed the region’s stagecoach traffic. A school near Black Walnut Baptist Church served the surrounding community until a high school was built in 1918. Today the Cluster Springs Volunteer Fire Department and Community Center sit near Route 501, alongside rural homes, churches, and roads leading toward the Dan. Cluster Springs is a crossroads community with a river watershed beneath it and a nineteenth-century travel story still tucked inside its name.
